چکیده

Geodynamic simulations increasingly rely on simulations with a true free surface to investigate questions of dynamic topography, tectonic deformation, gravity perturbations, and global mantle convection. However, implementations of free surface boundary conditions have proven challenging from a standpoint of accuracy, robustness, and stability. In particular, free surfaces tend to suffer from sloshing instabilities, also known as the “drunken sailor” instability, which severely limit time step sizes. Several schemes have been proposed in the literature to deal with these instabilities. Here we analyze the problem of creeping viscous flow with a free surface and discuss the origin of these instabilities. We demonstrate their cause and how existing stabilization schemes work to damp them out. We also propose a new scheme for removing instabilities from free surface calculations. It does not require modifications to the system matrix, nor additional variables, but is instead an explicit scheme based on nonstandard finite differences. It relies on a single stabilization parameter which may be identified with the smallest relaxation timescale of the free surface. Finally, we discuss the implementation of a free surface in the open source, community based mantle convection software ASPECT.

Generation of plate-like behavior and mantle heterogeneity from a spherical, viscoplastic convection model

[1] How plate tectonics arises from mantle convection is a question that has only very recently become feasible to address with spherical, viscoplastic computations. We present mainly internally heated convection results with temperature-dependent viscosity and explore parts of the Rayleigh number (Ra)– yield stress (sy) phase space, as well as the effects of depth-dependent sy, bottom heating,...

Free-surface formulation of mantle convection-I. Basic theory and application to plumes

In mantle convection models, the top surface is traditionally approximated as a freeslip boundary, and the dynamic topography is obtained by assuming that the normal stress on the free-slip boundary is compensated instantaneously through surface deformation. It has already been shown that this approximation is valid for longwavelength topography. Based on both viscous and viscoelastic models wi...

Role of temperature-dependent viscosity and surface plates in spherical shell models of mantle convection

Layered viscosity, temperature-dependent viscosity, and surface plates have an important effect on the scale and morphology of structure in spherical models of mantle convection. We find that long-wavelength structures can be produced either by a layered viscosity with a weak upper mantle or temperature-dependent viscosity even in the absence of surface plates, corroborating earlier studies. Ho...

Steady plumes produced by downwellings in Earth-like vigor spherical whole mantle convection models

[1] If mantle thermal upwellings (plumes) are the cause of volcanic ‘‘hot spots,’’ then observations suggest that plumes are relatively fixed with nonuniform distribution and limited lifetimes. To date, fixity of upwellings has only been shown in models of convection at either low-vigor or with layering, though studies where the lower mantle has high viscosity do frequently show upwellings with...
